Syllabus:

Class Description:

The 7th grade New Mexico History program provides an opportunity to develop knowledge of the historical, cultural, social, economic, political and geographic aspects of our state. The focus will be on state government, general knowledge, and early inhabitants to the Civil War in New Mexico.

  • 2 -Spiral notebooks
  • 1 package of pencils / a package of pens
  • 1 package of highlighters
  • 1 package of colored pencils
  • 2 glue sticks
  • The New Mexico Journey-Gibbs Smith
  • A History of New Mexico-Calvin & Susan Roberts

CLASS OBJECTIVES

The primary objective of this course is to learn about the history, geography, government, and political structure of the state of New Mexico.

 

EXPECTATIONS

  • Students must be prepared to begin class by reading the bell work daily.
  • Students will sit appropriately in classroom, respecting all furniture and self
  • If student comes to class without materials required, they must get prepared before instruction starts and not wait to be addressed by teacher. (Take care of your business!)
  • This classroom is a safe zone. Bullying of any sort will not be tolerated. Zero tolerance for violence of any type. Respect yourself, your surroundings and others in this class, and you will be respected.
  • “Labeling words” will not be allowed – your teacher will tell you which ones! If you are heard by the teacher or another student using certain words in my class, you will be asked to write an essay on a topic and have it signed by your guardian. IF you do not write the essay or have it signed by the following day, you will be given a referral.

PAIR AND SHARE MOMENTS / GROUP WORK

Questions may periodically be asked in class that you will be able to discuss with your “Pair and Share” partner. After you have had time to discuss the topic or question, you may be asked to share your ideas or answers. Group work will be a learning tool on several occasions. During group work, students will participate and collaborate with one another, getting along, respecting individual opinions, staying on task, using quiet voices and staying in assigned group.

CLASS PARTICIPATION

Class participation will certainly benefit during your learning process, especially if you’re participating on a regular basis.

MAKE UP WORK

Students who miss class assignments will have three days to complete any missed work. It is the student’s responsibility to get the missed assignment from the teacher.  After three days students will be required to attend a working lunch until such missed work is completed.

NO ZEROS POLICY

Students are expected to complete all classwork, homework, group work, and projects for class.  If student chooses to not do work in class they will receive a working lunch until that work is completed. 

OSI POLICY

While out of school on OSI’s students are expected to stay in their assigned order in line and behave in an appropriate manner. Students with missing work or excessive behavior concerns will not attend OSI and will not receive a refund for OSI in question.

ACADEMIC HONESTY

Students who cheat during a test or quiz will receive a zero for that test or assignment in question.

HOMEWORK POLICY

Students should expect at least 10 minutes of homework a night.  Organizing your Cornell notes, current events, vocabulary review, and occasionally working on projects (TBA)

CONSEQUENCES

  1. Name written on board-warning
  2. ü by name and lose 1 snip it
  3. üüby name and lunch detention
  4. Name circled and parents called
  5. Parent Teacher Conference or Administrative Intervention

SNIP IT PARTIES

At the end of each nine weeks students will participate in a snip it party.  A snip it party is a reward based intervention in which students earn a set of rewards for that day.  Every 9 weeks the set of rewards will be discussed and posted for students. .
